Plain-language law

A statute that requires certain documents, most often consumer contracts and insurance policies, to be written in clear and understandable language, avoiding unexplained legal jargon. New York enacted the first such law in 1977, and several other states followed with their own versions. Federal agencies are separately covered by the Plain Writing Act of 2010.
