Four corners of an instrument

A legal principle in contract and statutory interpretation stating that the meaning of a document should be determined solely from the words contained within the document itself, without reference to external evidence. This rule applies when the language of the instrument is clear and unambiguous. It aims to prevent parties from introducing extrinsic evidence to alter the plain meaning of a written agreement.
