Statutory interpretation
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004685
The process by which courts, judges, and administrative agencies determine the meaning of legislation. This task becomes necessary when the language of a statute is ambiguous or does not directly address a specific situation. Courts use different theories of interpretation, such as textualism, which focuses on the ordinary meaning of the text, and purposivism, which looks to the law's underlying purpose.
