Ambiguity

A situation in a legal document, statute, or contract where a word, phrase, or provision has more than one possible meaning, making its interpretation unclear. Courts often apply rules of construction to resolve ambiguities, such as interpreting the language against the drafter. Patent ambiguity is evident on the face of the document, while latent ambiguity arises from external facts.
