Fourteenth Amendment

An amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in 1868, that makes everyone born or naturalized in the country a citizen and bars states from denying any person life, liberty or property without due process of law or equal protection of the laws. Its Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses have driven civil rights litigation and the incorporation of most of the Bill of Rights against the states. It also contains the Privileges or Immunities Clause.
