Incorporation (of the Bill of Rights)

The legal doctrine by which the Supreme Court of the United States has applied most of the protections of the Bill of Rights to the states through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This process, occurring gradually over many decades, means that state and local governments must also respect these fundamental liberties. It prevents states from infringing upon rights such as freedom of speech or protection against unreasonable searches and seizures.
