First Amendment

An amendment to the United States Constitution that prohibits the government from making laws that establish a religion or impede the free exercise of religion, abridge the freedom of speech, infringe upon the freedom of the press, or interfere with the right to peaceably assemble. It also protects the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances. These protections, originally applied only to the federal government, have been extended to state and local governments through the doctrine of incorporation.
