The principle of separation between religious institutions and governmental authority, enshrined in the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This doctrine prohibits the government from establishing a religion or unduly interfering with the free exercise of religion. It aims to prevent governmental endorsement of religion and protect religious freedom.
