Establishment Clause

A provision within the First Amendment of the United States Constitution that prohibits the government from establishing or endorsing a religion. It prevents the government from favoring one religion over others or religion over non-religion. This clause has been interpreted by the Supreme Court to mandate a separation of church and state.
