Engel v. Vitale (1962)

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001871

A landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that ruled state-sponsored prayer in public schools violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Court determined that a New York state law requiring a brief, non-denominational prayer to be recited at the start of each school day was unconstitutional, even if the prayer was voluntary. This decision established that government-directed prayer in public schools is a prohibited establishment of religion.
