Chinese Exclusion Act

A United States federal law signed in 1882 that prohibited the immigration of all Chinese laborers for a ten-year period. The legislation was the first law enacted to prevent a specific ethnic group from immigrating to the U.S. and required Chinese individuals already in the country to obtain certificates to re-enter if they left. Originally temporary, the act was extended by the Geary Act in 1892 and made permanent in 1902, before being repealed by the Magnuson Act in 1943.
