Adjustment of status

The process by which an eligible foreign national already present in the United States can apply to become a lawful permanent resident without having to return to their home country to obtain an immigrant visa. This procedure requires the applicant to meet specific eligibility criteria, including a lawful entry and an approved immigrant petition. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) adjudicates these applications.
