Priority date

The date on which a patent application is first filed, establishing the novelty and non-obviousness of an invention against prior art. This date determines which publications, patents, or public uses qualify as prior art for the purpose of examining the application. An applicant can claim the priority date of an earlier-filed provisional application if the non-provisional application is filed within one year.
