Temporary Protected Status

A temporary immigration status granted to eligible nationals of certain countries who are already in the United States. This status, abbreviated as TPS, is designated by the Secretary of Homeland Security when conditions in a country, such as armed conflict or environmental disaster, prevent its nationals from returning safely. TPS beneficiaries are allowed to live and work in the U.S. for a specified period.
