Right

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004332

  1. A legally recognized and protected power, privilege, or interest that an individual holds, which others have a corresponding duty to respect. Rights can be constitutional, such as the right to free speech; statutory, created by legislation; or contractual, arising from an agreement. A legal right is distinct from a moral claim, as it is enforceable through the court system.

  2. Fundamental entitlements and freedoms granted to individuals by a governing legal framework, such as a constitution. These protections limit the power of the state and safeguard personal liberties, including freedom of expression, religion, and assembly, as well as procedural guarantees in legal proceedings. In the United States, many of these rights are explicitly enumerated in the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments to the Constitution.
