Equal protection

A constitutional principle requiring that state governments treat all similarly situated people in a similar manner under the law. This concept, derived from the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, prevents states from enacting laws that create arbitrary or invidious classifications. Courts apply different levels of scrutiny (rational basis, intermediate, or strict) to evaluate laws that treat groups of people differently, depending on the classification involved.
