Intermediate scrutiny

A standard of judicial review applied to laws that classify by sex or legitimacy. The government must show that the law is substantially related to a weighty governmental objective, a step above the merely legitimate purpose that rational basis review accepts. It sits between rational basis review and strict scrutiny, which demands a compelling interest and narrow tailoring.
