Suspect classification

A category of persons, such as race, national origin, or religion, that triggers strict scrutiny by courts when a law or government action differentiates based on that category. Laws based on suspect classifications are presumed unconstitutional and must serve a compelling government interest. This standard of review is the highest level of judicial scrutiny.
