Protected class

A group of individuals identified by a shared characteristic who are legally shielded from discrimination under federal, state, or local anti-discrimination laws. Membership in a protected class, such as based on race, gender, or religion, triggers heightened scrutiny for governmental actions that might disadvantage them. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 established several key protected classes in the United States.
