Extrinsic evidence

Evidence that is not contained within the four corners of a written document but is offered to explain, interpret, or supplement its terms. This type of evidence is subject to the parol evidence rule, which limits its admissibility in contract disputes. It may be allowed to clarify ambiguities or to prove fraud, duress, or mistake in the formation of the agreement.
