Harmless error

A mistake made by a lower court during a trial that an appellate court determines did not affect the outcome of the case. Even though an error occurred, it is not grounds for reversing the judgment because it did not prejudice the substantial rights of the party. Federal Rule of Criminal Procedure 52(a) addresses harmless error in criminal proceedings.
