Appellant

  1. The party who initiates an appeal to a higher court, seeking to overturn or modify a decision made by a lower court or administrative agency. This party must file a notice of appeal and present arguments detailing alleged errors in the prior proceeding. The appellant is also referred to as the petitioner in some jurisdictions.

  2. The party who appeals a lower court's decision, usually seeking reversal of that decision.
