Adequate and independent state grounds

A doctrine in United States constitutional law that prevents the Supreme Court from reviewing state court decisions that rest on state law grounds. If a state court decision is based on state law that is both adequate to support the judgment and independent of federal law, the Supreme Court lacks jurisdiction. This doctrine respects state sovereignty.
