Independent contractor
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-002595
A self-employed person or entity engaged to perform work for another party, but who retains control over the means and methods of completing the job. Unlike an employee, an independent contractor is not subject to the client's direct control over how the work is done. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses a multi-factor test, examining behavioral control, financial control, and the relationship of the parties, to distinguish contractors from employees for tax purposes.
