Independent contractor

A self-employed individual or entity engaged to perform services for a business without being classified as an employee. The hiring entity has the right to control or direct only the result of the work, not what will be done or how it will be done. Unlike employees, independent contractors are responsible for their own income taxes and self-employment taxes, and they are not covered by the hiring entity's workers' compensation or unemployment insurance.
