An individual, partnership, corporation, or other entity that hires and pays wages to one or more persons to perform work under its direct control and supervision. The employer-employee relationship is defined by the employer's right to control the manner and means by which the work is accomplished. Employers are subject to numerous federal and state laws governing wages, working hours, workplace safety, and anti-discrimination, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
