A nine-digit number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to identify a business entity for tax purposes, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number. Corporations, partnerships, and multi-member LLCs are required to obtain an Employer Identification Number (EIN) to file tax returns and report wages paid to employees. The number is formatted as XX-XXXXXXX and remains with the business entity for its entire existence.
