Marked for identification

The process of assigning an exhibit number or letter to an item of evidence during a legal proceeding, without necessarily admitting it into evidence. This procedure allows the parties and the court to refer to the item specifically during testimony or argument. After being marked for identification, the item may later be formally offered and admitted into evidence if a proper foundation is laid.
