Taxpayer identification number

A unique nine-digit number assigned to individuals and entities by a tax authority for identification purposes. This number, often abbreviated as TIN, is used to track tax obligations, process tax returns, and administer tax laws. In the United States, the Social Security Number (SSN) for individuals and the Employer Identification Number (EIN) for businesses are common forms of TINs.
