Individual Taxpayer Identification Number

A nine-digit tax processing number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not possess a Social Security number and are ineligible to obtain one. This identifier allows foreign nationals and others without Social Security numbers to comply with U.S. tax laws. It is formatted like a Social Security number, with the first digit always a 9 and the fourth and fifth digits ranging from 70-88, 90-92, or 94-99.
