Adoption Taxpayer Identification Number

A nine-digit identification number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to a child who is being adopted and does not yet have a Social Security number. This temporary identifier permits adoptive parents to claim the child as a dependent on their tax return. It is used until the adoption is finalized and a Social Security number is issued.
