Preparer Taxpayer Identification Number

An identification number issued by the IRS, in the form of the letter P followed by eight digits, to anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation. The preparer enters it on every return or refund claim prepared for pay instead of a Social Security number, and renews it each year through an IRS online account.
