Notice of Deficiency

A formal letter from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) informing a taxpayer that the IRS has determined an underpayment of tax. This notice, also known as a 90-day letter, gives the taxpayer 90 days to either pay the additional tax or file a petition with the U.S. Tax Court to dispute the assessment. It is a prerequisite for the IRS to assess additional tax.
