Installment agreement

A contract between a taxpayer and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that allows the taxpayer to make monthly payments for tax liabilities over an extended period. This arrangement is available when a taxpayer cannot pay the full amount of tax owed by the due date. The IRS sets the terms, including the payment schedule and any applicable interest and penalties, which continue to accrue until the debt is fully satisfied.
