Employee Retirement Income Security Act

A federal law enacted in 1974 that sets minimum standards for most voluntarily established retirement and health plans in private industry to protect individuals in these plans. ERISA requires plans to provide participants with information about their features and funding, establishes fiduciary responsibilities for those who manage plan assets, and provides for enforcement of its provisions. It does not require employers to establish plans, but regulates those that are established.
