A Qualified Domestic Relations Order, a special type of court order that permits an alternate payee, such as a former spouse, child, or other dependent, to receive a portion of a participant's retirement plan benefits. This order creates or recognizes the existence of an alternate payee's right to receive all or a portion of the benefits payable under a retirement plan. It must meet specific requirements under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) to be valid.
