Work for hire

A legal doctrine in copyright law where the employer, not the creator, is considered the author and owner of a copyrighted work. This applies when a work is prepared by an employee within the scope of their employment, or when a specially ordered or commissioned work falls into specific categories and there is a written agreement. The employer holds all rights from the moment of creation.
