Work made for hire

A specific category of copyrighted work under U.S. copyright law where the employer or commissioning party is deemed the author and owner, rather than the individual who created it. This status arises either when an employee creates a work within the scope of their employment, or when a specially ordered or commissioned work fits certain statutory categories and is subject to a written agreement. The copyright vests initially in the employer or commissioning party.
