Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001856
A common law principle stating that an employer can terminate an employee for any reason, or no reason at all, and an employee can leave a job at any time for any reason, or no reason at all. This doctrine applies unless there is a contract specifying the terms and duration of employment, or if the termination violates public policy or anti-discrimination laws. Most U.S. states adhere to some form of this doctrine.
