Having a legal obligation or liability for one's actions or for the actions of another under one's control. This accountability can arise from a contract, a statute, or tort law principles, such as negligence. For example, under the doctrine of respondeat superior, an employer is held responsible for the wrongful acts of an employee committed within the scope of employment.
