Responsive pleading

A formal written document filed in a lawsuit by a party in response to a prior pleading from an opposing party. The most common responsive pleading is an answer to a complaint, in which the defendant admits or denies the plaintiff's allegations and may raise affirmative defenses. Other examples include replies to counterclaims or answers to cross-claims, all governed by rules of civil procedure.
