  1. A formal written statement filed with a court by a party in a civil or criminal lawsuit, setting forth their claims, defenses, or other legal arguments. These documents define the issues to be tried and inform the opposing party and the court of the factual and legal basis of each party's position. Examples include complaints, answers, counterclaims, and replies.

  2. Written statements filed with the court that describe a party's legal or factual assertions about the case.
