To formally declare a defendant's guilt or innocence in response to a criminal charge. This declaration occurs during an arraignment, where the defendant enters a plea of guilty, not guilty, or nolo contendere. A plea bargain involves an agreement between the prosecutor and the defendant to resolve the case without a trial.
