A plea entered by a defendant in a criminal case, also known as nolo contendere, which means the defendant does not admit guilt but accepts the punishment. This plea has the same effect as a guilty plea for sentencing purposes but cannot be used as an admission of guilt in a subsequent civil lawsuit. It is often used to avoid potential civil liability.
