Plea bargain

An agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and the defendant, where the defendant pleads guilty or no contest to a lesser charge or to one of several charges. In exchange, the prosecutor agrees to recommend a lighter sentence or drop other charges. This process resolves a large percentage of criminal cases in the United States.
