Plea colloquy

A formal dialogue between a judge and a defendant in a criminal case, conducted to confirm that a plea of guilty or nolo contendere is made voluntarily and with full understanding of its consequences. During this exchange, the judge questions the defendant about their awareness of the charges, the rights being waived, and the potential penalties. This procedure is mandated by Rule 11 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure in federal courts.
