Charges dropped

The decision by a prosecutor to discontinue criminal proceedings against a defendant before a trial or conviction. This action typically occurs when the prosecutor determines there is insufficient evidence to proceed, a witness is unavailable, or a plea bargain is reached. Unlike a dismissal by a judge, dropped charges are a prosecutorial decision.
