Charging lien

A claim by an attorney on a judgment or settlement obtained for a client, securing payment of the attorney's fees and costs. This lien attaches to the proceeds of the litigation itself, rather than to the client's general assets. It prevents the client from receiving the full amount of the recovery without first satisfying the attorney's claim.
