Pretext

A false reason or motive given to conceal the true purpose or intention behind an action, especially one that is legally questionable or improper. In legal contexts, a pretext is often used to justify an action that would otherwise be unlawful, such as a discriminatory employment decision or an illegal search. Courts examine whether the stated reason is the actual reason for the action.
