Employment-at-will doctrine

A legal principle in many jurisdictions stating that an employer can terminate an employee for any reason, or no reason, and an employee can leave employment for any reason, or no reason, at any time. This doctrine is subject to exceptions, such as those based on discrimination, breach of contract, or public policy. Most states in the United States adhere to this doctrine, though some have modified it.
